Google Play Feature Graphic: Size, Rules & Design Tips

The 1024×500 Google Play feature graphic explained: file rules, where it appears, safe zones, what gets rejected and layouts that work.

Updated 5 min read

The Google Play feature graphic is a 1024 × 500 px banner, uploaded as a JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no transparency. Every listing needs one to publish. It sits at the top of your store page when you add a promo video and is used when Google Play features your app — so keep it simple, keep key elements away from the edges, and don’t rely on small text.

1024 × 500, not 1024 × 512
Many design tools offer 1024 × 512 or 2048 × 1000 presets. Play Console only accepts exactly 1024 × 500 px — design at 2048 × 1000 if you like, but export at 1024 × 500.

Where it appears

  • Top of the store listing, when you have a promo video. The graphic is the video’s cover image, with a play button over the center. Tapping it plays your YouTube video.
  • Featuring and promotions. Google Play can use it in editorial and promotional placements. Google’s guidance is to convey the app or game experience and highlight your core value.
  • Not usually on the listing without a video. If you have no promo video, the listing generally opens with your icon, title and screenshots instead. The graphic is still required, though.

Because the same image can be shown at different sizes and with overlays, design it to work as a small thumbnail and as a wide banner. Preview it with your icon and screenshots in the listing preview.

Safe zones & cropping

Google warns that the feature graphic may be cropped or overlaid, so keep key elements out of the “cutoff zones”. Google doesn’t publish pixel-exact safe areas for every surface, so these margins are a conservative rule of thumb, not an official spec:

ZoneRule of thumbWhy
Outer edgesKeep text and logos about 10% (≈ 100 px horizontally, 50 px vertically) from each edgeEdges can be cropped on different screen widths
CenterLeave the middle clear of text if you have a promo videoThe play button sits over the center
Bottom stripAvoid small text along the bottom edgeSome surfaces overlay a gradient or labels

A safe layout puts your logo and headline in the left or right third and lets imagery bleed off the other side.

What to avoid

  1. Pure white, black or dark-gray backgrounds. Google advises against them because the graphic blends into the Play UI in light or dark theme. Use a color from your brand or icon — the palette tool pulls one from your icon.
  2. Transparency. A 32-bit PNG is rejected. Flatten onto a background.
  3. Lots of small text. At thumbnail size, anything beyond a short headline is unreadable. Five words or fewer is a good target.
  4. Time-sensitive or ranking claims. “#1 app”, “Best of 2026”, prices, discounts or “Free” go stale and conflict with Google Play’s metadata policy.
  5. Repeating your screenshots. A cropped screenshot rarely works at 2:1. Use a focused hero visual instead.
  6. Calls to action like “Download now”. The listing already has an Install button.
  7. Google Play or other third-party branding you don’t have permission to use, including store badges.

Layouts that work

1. Logo + headline + device

Icon and a short headline on the left, a tilted phone with your best screen bleeding off the right edge. The most common pattern for utility and productivity apps.

2. Hero illustration or key art

For games and brands with strong characters: full-bleed key art, with the logo in one third. Keep faces and the logo out of the center if a video plays over it.

3. Bold color + one message

A gradient in your brand color, your logo and one line of value proposition. It works at any size and is the easiest to localize.

4. Feature collage

Two or three UI cards or devices arranged diagonally. Works for apps whose value is breadth (e.g. “Budgets, bills and goals in one place”), but keep it uncluttered.

Localize the text, not the layout
Each store listing language can have its own feature graphic. Keep text in one editable layer so translating it is a copy change — German and French headlines often run noticeably longer than English. See localizing screenshots.

Pre-upload checklist

  • Exactly 1024 × 500 px.
  • JPEG, or PNG saved as 24-bit RGB with no alpha.
  • Background isn’t pure white, black or dark gray.
  • Logo and text stay clear of the edges, and of the center if you have a promo video.
  • Readable when shrunk to roughly a quarter of its size.
  • No prices, rankings, awards you can’t back up, or “download” CTAs.
  • Matches your icon and screenshots visually — check them together in the listing preview.
  • Alt text written (up to 140 characters), e.g. “Budget app showing monthly spending chart on a phone”.

Making one with our tools

  1. Open the editor and add a Google Play feature graphic board — it’s preset to 1024 × 500.
  2. Start from a template, drop in your icon and a device mockup, and reuse the caption styles from your screenshots so the listing looks consistent.
  3. Translate the headline with AI (using your own OpenRouter or Gemini key) if you ship multiple languages.
  4. Export: the graphic is written as an opaque image at exactly 1024 × 500, alongside your screenshots in the same ZIP.

If you made the graphic elsewhere, run it through the screenshot checker to confirm size and alpha before uploading. For the rest of the Play listing graphics, see Google Play screenshot sizes.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the Google Play feature graphic?

The feature graphic is exactly 1024 × 500 px, uploaded as a JPEG or 24-bit PNG without an alpha channel. Other sizes or transparent PNGs are rejected.

Is the feature graphic required on Google Play?

Yes. Play Console requires a feature graphic before you can publish your store listing, even if you never add a promo video.

Where is the Google Play feature graphic shown?

It appears at the top of your store listing when you add a promo video, with a play button over it, and it can be used when Google Play features or promotes your app. Without a video, most listings don't show it on the details page.

Can the feature graphic have a transparent background?

No. It must be a JPEG or a 24-bit PNG with no alpha channel. Flatten the image onto a solid or gradient background before exporting.

What should I put on my feature graphic?

Your app icon or logo, a short value proposition and a visual of the app or game experience, with important elements kept away from the edges and the center left clear if you have a promo video. Avoid pure white, black or dark gray backgrounds and time-sensitive claims.

Can I use the same image for the feature graphic and the TV banner?

Not directly: the feature graphic is 1024 × 500 px while the Android TV banner is 1280 × 720 px. Reuse the artwork, but lay it out separately for each size.
